Cosmetic ear correction or otoplasty is a procedure designed to correct a congenital ear deformity such as malposition of earlobes or auricles. The deformity can be unilateral or bilateral (symmetric or asymmetric).
This surgery is most commonly performed on children at age 4-14 years, although it may be done on adults, too. The procedure itself is painless for the patient, is done under local anesthesia and usually takes about an hour. The incision is placed behind the ear, so the scar remains invisible.
What is the recovery time?
Bandages are removed after 7-10 days, and replaced by lighter bandages. A full recovery follows soon afterwards, although it is recommended to avoid any activities for at least a month in which the ears may be bent.
How long will the results last?
Otoplasty ensures permanent results.
Are there any side effects?
Swelling of the ear can be expected. As a result of the swelling, a slight loss of hearing may occur, but will last no more than a few days. In general, any unwanted effects will subside within a week.
